Row by Row

Row by Row Experience

Row by Row is like a shop hop but there are no fees and no cards to stamp. Over the summer you visit participating quilt shops in different cities and towns and receive a free pattern for a row in a quilt. Exclusive Fabric Plates™ by Zebra Patterns will be available in most shops. Each one is unique! You then combine your rows in any way to create a unique quilt that represents your travels throughout the summer. Row by Row Experience

Row by Row History

Row by Row Experience™ began in 2011 with 20 quilt shops across New York State. In 2012 the event grew to include 62 participating shops. In 2013 there were 138 shops throughout the New York and Pennsylvania. In 2014 over 1250 quilt shops participated in 34 states and Ontario.

Plans are underway for the biggest and best Row by Row Experience™ ever in 2015! All 50 states and several more Canadian provinces are planning fun for travelers throughout the summer. Although the quilt shops are organized by area, quilters have no borders.

Row by Row Themes

The Row by Row Experience™ has had a theme for each year, starting with it's first year in New York State in 2011. Themes have been:

  • 2011 - Summertime (Row by Row begins in New York State)
  • 2012 - I Love Stitching in NY (Row by Row's second year, still in New York only)
  • 2013 - Fairs and Festivals (Pennsylvania joins with New York )
  • 2013 - Sew a Season (34 States and one Canadian Province join Row by Row)
  • 2015 - Row by Row H20 (All 50 States and 9 Canadian Provinces)
  • 2016 - Home Sweet Home

2015 Row by Row

This was the first year that I participated in Row by Row. It was also the first year that Alberta participated. I don't really need a reason to hop in my car and head out to nowhere, but I'm excited to have Row by Row to use an my legitimate excuse. I managed to visit 31 stores in 14 States and 2 Provinces.

Timeless Treasures

The 2015 theme is H2O featuring fun fabric coordinates by Debra Gabel for Timeless Treasures.

There is also a free Row by Roy H2O coordinated Tote Bag by Linda Turner Griepentrog. The bag is 14" wide x 16" high x 4" deep. 2015 Tote Bag Pattern.

2015 Row by Row Wall Hanging

So I would have one for each year, I decided to do the 2015 hanging before startiing the 2016. It was a good point to figure out the template and decide what I like and don't like. By the time it was finished I had worked out the kinks for the future hangings.

2016 Row by Row

Row by Row - Home Sweet Home - 2016

This is the second year that I rolled along the Row by Row Trail. This year I managed to visit 46 stores in two Provinces and ten States. Total miles - 7,500.

Appliqué Problem Update - September, 2016

Last year I discovered one little problem - I don't really like appliqué. As a solution I was just going to do those rows that are very unique or have a special interest to me. By the time 2016 Row by Row ended, I still did not have even one row finished from 2015. It was evident I was never going to do a row by row pattern. My friend, Karen did the row from Illinois in 2015 for me and took away the unfinished row from Mt. Forest, Ontario. I abandoned the rest.

Every Problem has a Solution

Since I loved participating in (or rather driving to) Row by Row so much, and since I had oodles of fabric from both 2015 and 2016, I decided to scrap my futile intentions of finishing a row by row quilt and focus on creating something I would actually enjoy. It didn't take long for a plan to come to life - an annual row by row wall hanging. I decided though, to back track and make the 2015 wall hanging first. That finished, I made one for Karen. The 2016 wall hanging followed immediately with two more - one for Karen and one for Carol.

2016 Theme from Timeless Treasures

The 2016 theme is Home Sweet Home featuring fun fabric coordinates by Debra Gabel for Timeless Treasures. There are 4 feature fabrics and huge selection of coordinating fabrics.

2016 Row by Row Wall Hanging

I used the Neighborhood Row Strip, fussy cut the License Plates Collage and appliquéd them onto Kona Black (yes, appliqué). For the back I used the Home Sweet Home Map

There is also a free Row by Row™ Home Sweet Home coordinated Tote Bag pattern by Linda Turner Griepentrog. The bag is 14" wide x 16" high and 4" deep. 2016 Tote Bag Pattern.
